There are 2 different drive sizes, the early model pre march 2000 had small 240mm drives and after 2000 and including the Outback.  This also aplies to how to check for the Resort model also.
The big no no with doing the clutches is lathing them flat.  They are not supposed to be dead flat. 
All you need to do is get some very, very fine wet and dry sandpaper and go around in small circles to take of any sharp edges.  This will also give the corks something to grip agains.
